TANNIN

WHAT IS TANNIN?

Tannins are naturally occurring plant polyphenols.  Tannins are common to all plant foods.

WHAT AFFECT DOES TANNIN HAVE ON OUR BODIES?

Tannins bind and precipitate proteins (which is why tannin is used to tan leather). They can have a large influence on the nutritive value of many foods eaten by humans. Consuming high amounts of tannin can be damaging to the body and inhibits the absorption of iron.  Individuals with iron deficiency should limit their intake of traditional green and black teas.

Tannins are responsible for the bitter taste contained in traditional green and black teas which many tea drinkers mask by adding cream and sugar.

Lifespan Rooibos Tea is naturally sweet and extremely low in tannin.
